On this page I'll share information I've gained from experience with my own pets.

Tip 1: Introducing a new ferret to the group?

Introducing a new ferret to the group? We have found the way we do it, thus far it's flawless. (Not to say it will work everytime. Some ferrets just don't go together.)

What we do is remove a items out of the cage and give it a good clean. We wash all the towels, hammocks and beds. Then before we even introduce them,we run them a bath and put them all in at once. So, the first time they meet they are in the bath and all smell alike. annnnnnnnd.. dun-da-da-dahhh!!! You have a bunch of friendly ferts!
So far, for us this works. We have 4 with a four month age difference and they all took to eachother very well.
Of course you must leave time for some "Sniffage" afterwards. If it doesn't seem like they are playing with they newbie don't worry, ferret cliques dont last long(they are much too playful) they'll get over it and will be wrestling in no time.  Just make sure to keep an eye on them for they first few days.
Make sure the wrestling is not TOO rough!( with too much hissing, fur puffing, and in really bad cases drawn blood.) Then, you might have a problem.

Hopefully this works for you. Let us know or any other ways that you have done thats worked or not.

Tip 2: Ferret Hygiene

Ferret Hygiene is very important!

If you don't keep it up your ferret can catch different parasites, sickness or other unwanted problems!

Always keep the cage as clean as you can! If your ferts are like ours, they will not poop in an even remotely full dish! They'll wait 'till you release them, and then find a corner! EEep, and no one likes a mess!

Be sure to wash their beds, food dish, and water bottle(or bowl) aswell, bacteria lives everywhere!

Cliping their nails
While sometimes being rather difficult to do, is a must!  If you do not clip them, long nails can cause your babies pain!  When you cut them you have to be careful not to cut too short! If you draw blood it's not a good thing... Make sure you are far enough away from the little red/pink veins in their nails.  If you have gone past that, you have gone TOO FAR!

A good trick to get them to let you do it, is to distract them with ferrettone, or a treat they enjoy!

Our need a clipping at least once every 2 weeks.

Cleaning ears
They are little, but produce alot of wax.  It is very important to clean their ears, if you don't keep it up the little ankle biters can get EAR MITES! Which are not pleasant.
You don't have to clean them in a certain amount of time, just make sure you at least check their ears and make sure their is not a ton of waxy build-up.

You must be very careful when you DO do it because if you are not, you risk damaging their Wee-Ear drums.

You can pick up some ear cleaner at the pet store, use that and some Q-tips. ( some people say not to, if you are not sure about them or uncomfortable using them. Don't)  I have been doing it for a while and am very careful, and skilled at cleaning their ears! An art I have mastered.

For any other tips or advice contact the Ferret Rescue Society, whose address is located on our links page.

And, another good idea is to purchase "Ferrets For Dummies", because even though we knew alot about ferrets before we got the book, it taught us many things we DIDN'T know.  It makes a great reference book aswell!
